A common new work electric box is about 3" deep.
Assuming 1/2" sheet rock to finish out the room, a new work box will require a wall depth of 2 1/2". Perhaps use 2 5/8" to be safe.
Not really a big deal.. as this can always be measured in the field. But, thinking about these types of things helps commit stuff to memory.
