Plumbing code: fixture center lines

  • 0
By code, toilets need to be centered of off adjacent walls 15".  When roughing in a toilet, this means 15 1/2" from the framing to take into account the thickness of the Sheetrock.

If a sink is directly next to the toilet, and does not have a vanity, then the center line of the sink shall be 30" from the center line of the toilet.

If the sink sits on a vanity, then the same rule for spacing off the wall applies (15").

Quick and dirty braces

If a brace is needed to temporarily support something, try this method:

If you are using a 2x4 or whatever, just try to get some rough measurements of what will work.  Think about a triangle.  Say you need to support something that is approximately 1'-0" horizontally away from your support  point, but also about 5'-0" up vertically.

Now, this would a right triangle, with legs of 1 and 5 (purposefully left the units off now.. it doesn't matter about the scale).  We want to know the bevel that should be cut on top.

A right triangle of legs 5 and 5 would have a bevel of 45 degrees at each end (the brace is the hypotenuse).  Thus, a right triangle with legs of 1 and 5 would be 1/5 of the 5 and 5 triangle's angle

45 x (1/5) = 9 degrees.

Put a bevel of 9 degrees on it.  It fits perfect.  I just made that up on the spot.  I plan to use it from now on.

New work electric boxes

A common new work electric box is about 3" deep.

Assuming 1/2" sheet rock to finish out the room, a new work box will require a wall depth of 2 1/2".  Perhaps use 2 5/8" to be safe.

Not really a big deal.. as this can always be measured in the field.  But, thinking about these types of things helps commit stuff to memory.

Genuine mahogany

Trying to cut some new shelves for an existing mahogany library is nearly impossible.  Genuine mahogany is pretty rare nowadays, likely due to the rapid deforestation of Central and South America.  Apparently it is pretty amazing to work with. I'll never know, since my forefathers basically decimated the entire species.

A decent match at a slightly lower price ($100/sheet) is Sapele, which is a wood reminiscent of mahogany and found in the tropical region of Africa.

Good synopsis here:

Left and right hand drain tubs

  • 0
Tubs have sides.  If  a tub has a skirt (or the side that is open and touches the ground), then it can have two orientations.  If facing the skirt (the normal way you approach a tub) and the drain is on the right, then it is a right handed tub.  Naturally, if the drain is on the left, then it is a left handed tub.

Seems simple, and it is.  The direction of the tub is oriented by the location of its drain.

S-traps

In plumbing, S-traps are not code if you are doing "new work" plumbing in a house.  If you are retrofitting an old S-trap, then it is okay to replace it with a new S-trap.  All sinks should now have P-traps.
