Tubs have sides. If a tub has a skirt (or the side that is open and touches the ground), then it can have two orientations. If facing the skirt (the normal way you approach a tub) and the drain is on the right, then it is a right handed tub. Naturally, if the drain is on the left, then it is a left handed tub.
Seems simple, and it is. The direction of the tub is oriented by the location of its drain.
